2024 Sustainability Goals
We look forward to seeing everyone in Montréal for this year’s conference! While invaluable, ISES recognizes the environmental impacts of in-person meetings and is working towards carbon neutral meetings. In the interim, we are committed to making more sustainable choices wherever possible, including:
- Prioritizing venues that are located near public transportation hubs and have a strong commitment to sustainability, including implementation of energy-efficient practices, waste management and reduction strategies, and other environmentally conscious initiatives.
- Utilizing vendors–such as our #ISES2024 caterers–that are able to prioritize sustainable and locally sourced options to support local businesses and farmers, reduce transportation emissions, and minimize the environmental impacts
- Going digital–we have committed to a digital-first approach for conference materials, such that all conference materials, including schedules, abstracts, and presentations, will be available online or through digital platforms.
While we are taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint as an organization, we also believe that individual actions can collectively make a significant difference. Here are some suggestions from our sustainability team to help each of us mitigate the carbon footprint of ISES2024:
- Use Sustainable Transit: Take public transit, carpool, and walk or cycle where possible. This year, all attendees will have a public transportation pass that is good for the duration of the conference! If flying is necessary, consider offsetting your travel emissions through reputable carbon offset programs. We will be collecting donations as a society to offset our carbon to support PlanetAir’s ETS Portfolio for Applied Climate Research. To get a head start on calculating your emissions, you can find a calculator here
- Reduce Waste: Minimize single-use plastic waste whenever possible. Be sure to pack a reusable bottle! Use digital materials (notes, boarding passes, reservations) as much as possible and use recycled paper for printing when necessary. Make use of the provided recycling bins and composting facilities.
- Looking for a bite to eat? Try one of Montréal’s zero-waste (https://www.mtl.org/en/experience/spots-zero-waste-montreal) or plant-based restaurants!
- Minimize Energy Consumption: Be mindful of your energy usage by turning off lights, electronics, and air conditioning when they are not needed, and make use of natural light and ventilation when possible. If you are staying in the conference hotel, consider opting out of daily linen changes to save water and energy.
- Book sustainable stays: If considering alternative lodging from the conference venue, look into accommodations with a strong commitment to sustainability – ones that implement low-carbon and energy-efficient practices, waste management, diversion, and reduction strategies, and other environmental conscious initiatives.
Thank you for your support in making this event environmentally responsible. As environmental exposure science professionals, we have a high level of knowledge and awareness of the causes and consequences of climate change and therefore responsibility for mitigation. Together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future! If you are interested in helping ISES with sustainability efforts, please contact us at events@intlexposurescience.org.
Statement of commitment to providing a safe environment
ISES leadership recognizes that conferences can sometimes become a place where attendees may feel unsafe because of harassment or the perception that harassing behaviors are tolerated or not addressed. As a result, these individuals are not fully able to participate which impedes their contributions to the scientific exchanges supported by NIH.
We have a safety plan in place, which is a proactive strategy meant to convey to attendees a commitment to fostering a safe environment and to alert potential violators that inappropriate behaviors will not be tolerated.
ISES, as part of our commitment to providing a safe environment, has an official Anti-Harassment Policy which includes “What to Do Onsite” procedures. It is a living document that is available at our website and can also be found here: https://www.flipsnack.com/7CBE99FF8D6/anti-harassment-policy.html?p=1
